A firefighter accountability system is the structured method used to track personnel assignments during emergency operations. Most departments use a passport system, apparatus board, or command board to maintain crew integrity on the fireground.

Each firefighter carries accountability tags (PAR tags) that identify their name, riding position, or rank. When crews report to command, these tags are collected and assigned to divisions, groups, or branches to provide clear visual tracking of personnel locations and assignments.
